He was the a great shogun and he used his remaining years to create and solidify the Tokugawa shogunate (that was eventually to become the Edo period, about two hundred years under Ieyasu's Shogunate), the third shogunal government (after the Minamoto and the Ashikaga).

The Tokugawa Shogunate would rule Japan for the next 250 years.
