In the old days the Tessen was not used only as a normal Sensu (fan) or self defense weapon, but also was considered as a symbol of authority in Japan.

Since there were many situations when a Samurai was required to leave his Katana, like visiting a superior or another person’s house, the Tessen was very popular because in spite of its ordinary aspect, it becomes a very effective weapon in training hands.
